Review – Darker Shades of Summer (2023)
⭐ IMDb Rating: 2.6/10
Genres: Romance | Thriller
Darker Shades of Summer tries to weave romance with psychological thrills, but unfortunately, it falls short of its ambitions. Directed by Ntiarna Xavier Knight, the film has an intriguing premise — a married couple attending an experimental retreat to test their relationship — but the execution suffers from weak writing, uneven pacing, and performances that never fully immerse the audience.
Danielle Scott and Mark Sears, as the troubled couple, deliver serviceable performances, but the lack of depth in their character arcs makes it hard for viewers to empathize. Stephen Staley plays a mysterious figure connected to the retreat, but even his presence can’t elevate the tension beyond surface level. The script, penned by Scott Chambers and Craig McLearie, has glimpses of promise but gets bogged down by clichéd twists and repetitive dialogues.
Visually, the film uses the retreat’s setting well — isolated, sun-soaked, and slightly unnerving — but the cinematography alone cannot salvage the thin narrative. By the time the climax arrives, the supposed shocking revelations feel predictable and underwhelming.
👉 Overall, Darker Shades of Summer is a missed opportunity: a thriller that wanted to explore the fragility of love under pressure but ended up being a forgettable affair.

Full Storyline
The film follows Anna (Danielle Scott) and David (Mark Sears), a married couple whose relationship has grown distant and strained. In a desperate attempt to rekindle their bond, they sign up for a secluded retreat that promises couples a transformative experience — a place where love is tested through intense emotional and psychological exercises.
At first, the retreat feels therapeutic, with guided sessions, intimate conversations, and controlled challenges designed to rebuild trust. However, things soon take a darker turn. The exercises become invasive, pushing the couple to relive painful memories and confront hidden resentments. Anna accuses David of past betrayals, while David resents Anna for her emotional distance.
As tensions rise, the retreat’s enigmatic overseer (Stephen Staley) begins to blur the lines between therapy and manipulation. The couple realizes they’re not just participants — they’re subjects in a disturbing experiment. Strange noises at night, surveillance cameras hidden in their quarters, and the sudden disappearance of another couple at the retreat fuel paranoia.
Anna grows increasingly suspicious that David is colluding with the retreat organizers, while David believes Anna is deliberately sabotaging their marriage. Their love, already fragile, spirals into mistrust and hostility. The overseer exploits their conflict, pushing them into violent confrontations under the guise of “healing.”
In the final act, Anna uncovers that the retreat is less about saving marriages and more about studying how far love can be stretched before it breaks. She attempts to escape, but the manipulation has already fractured her relationship with David beyond repair. In a chaotic climax, the couple turns on each other, their love destroyed by the very retreat that promised to save it.
The film ends ambiguously — Anna leaves the retreat alone, shattered, while David remains behind, broken and submissive to the experiment’s control. The “ultimate test of love” proves to be less about healing and more about destruction.
