Review:
Sukumar’s Rangasthalam is a powerful blend of rustic storytelling and raw emotions. Ram Charan delivers one of his finest performances, perfectly portraying Chittibabu’s innocence, anger, and vulnerability. Samantha shines as Ramalakshmi, while Jagapathi Babu adds depth with his menacing presence.
The cinematography by R. Rathnavelu beautifully captures the earthy visuals of village life, and Devi Sri Prasad’s music enhances both the energy and soul of the film. Though the runtime feels a little long, the screenplay holds attention with strong character arcs and emotional weight.
The climax twist elevates the narrative, leaving the audience with a lingering impact. With its commercial success and critical acclaim, Rangasthalam is rightly hailed as one of the greatest Telugu films of the decade.
⭐ Rating: 4.5/5
👉 Must-watch for those who love intense drama, rural authenticity, and unforgettable performances.
📝 Full Story of Rangasthalam (2018)
The film is set in the 1980s in the fictional village of Rangasthalam. The story follows Chittibabu (Ram Charan), a simple, partially hearing-impaired man who works as a farmer and irrigates fields using an electric motor owned by Kolli Rangamma (Anasuya Bharadwaj). Though short-tempered and grumpy, Chittibabu is loved in the village for his innocence.
The village is controlled by Phanindra Bhupathi (Jagapathi Babu), the powerful and feared President of the Panchayat. He runs the cooperative society (“Society”), which lends money at high interest and seizes land when farmers fail to repay. Early in the story, a poor farmer named Erra Srinu loses his crops to the society and is found dead, assumed to have committed suicide.
Chittibabu’s life changes when his elder brother Kumar Babu (Aadhi Pinisetty) returns from the Gulf. Kumar Babu is disturbed by the exploitation of villagers and vows to bring justice. Meanwhile, Chittibabu falls in love with Ramalakshmi (Samantha), a strong-willed village girl. Their love faces hurdles due to misunderstandings and Chittibabu’s hearing problem, but eventually they reconcile.
Kumar Babu begins openly opposing Bhupathi and encourages villagers to stand up against corruption. Tensions rise when Kumar Babu decides to contest the Panchayat elections against Bhupathi, breaking his 30-year unopposed reign. Chittibabu initially gets bribed to betray his brother but soon realizes the truth and supports him.
As the elections approach, Bhupathi’s violent past comes to light—he had murdered villagers, including Rangamma’s husband and Erra Srinu, for daring to oppose him. The situation worsens when Kumar Babu is ambushed and fatally attacked by Bhupathi’s men. Chittibabu arrives too late, and though he fights off the goons, his brother dies in his arms. Kumar Babu tries to reveal the killer’s name before dying, but Chittibabu cannot hear it.
The tragedy devastates Chittibabu, who vows revenge. With the help of villagers, he hunts Bhupathi, but the truth slowly unfolds—Kumar Babu was not killed by Bhupathi. Using a hearing aid later, Chittibabu realizes his brother’s last word was “Srimannarayana”, pointing to Dakshina Murthy (Prakash Raj), the local MLA.
Murthy, who once pretended to support the brothers, is revealed as the real mastermind. He ordered Kumar Babu’s murder because his daughter Padma (Kumar Babu’s lover) was in love with a man of lower caste, which Murthy could not tolerate.
Chittibabu keeps Murthy alive for two years while he is in a coma after an accident, waiting until he recovers so that his death would be more meaningful. Once Murthy regains health and begins celebrating his political rise, Chittibabu confronts him, reveals he knows the truth, and kills him coldly, completing his brother’s revenge.
In the end, Chittibabu walks away with Ramalakshmi, while Padma and her husband arrive—closing the circle of love, betrayal, and justice in Rangasthalam.
