Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan (2025) – Review

Director: Santosh Singh
Writer: Mansi Bagla
Cast: Vikrant Massey, Shanaya Kapoor
Production: Zee Studios & Mini Films
Release Date: 11 July 2025

Plot & Themes:

Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan adapts Ruskin Bond’s poignant short story The Eyes Have It into a contemporary romantic drama. The film follows the journey of a visually impaired musician (Vikrant Massey) and a theater artist (Shanaya Kapoor) who meet during a train ride through the Himalayas. Their bond develops through conversation, voice, and touch—without ever directly confronting their shared blindness. At its core, the narrative is about perception, vulnerability, and how love transcends physical sight.

Performances:

Vikrant Massey, known for his subtle intensity, brings tenderness and restraint to his role, capturing both fragility and hope. Shanaya Kapoor, making her debut, portrays the innocence and curiosity of her character with freshness, though at times her performance feels raw compared to Massey’s seasoned depth. Their chemistry, however, feels natural—anchored in unspoken emotions rather than dramatic dialogues.

Direction & Cinematography:

Santosh Singh presents the film with delicate pacing, using Mussoorie’s misty hills and Mumbai’s urban settings to contrast solitude with chaos. The cinematography lingers on soundscapes and tactile details, emphasizing what the characters feel rather than what they see. This creative choice is both the film’s strength and, occasionally, its weakness—slowing down moments that may test mainstream audiences’ patience.

Strengths:

  • Sensitive adaptation of a classic Ruskin Bond story.
  • Vikrant Massey’s moving performance.
  • A fresh, minimalist approach to romance.

Weaknesses:

  • Shanaya Kapoor’s inexperience shows in key emotional scenes.
  • Pacing feels uneven, especially in the second half.
  • The subtle storytelling may not appeal to commercial audiences.

Box Office & Reception:

Despite critical appreciation for its thematic depth and Vikrant Massey’s performance, the film struggled at the box office. Its minimalist style and lack of typical Bollywood melodrama didn’t resonate with mass audiences, leading it to be labeled a box-office bomb.

Verdict:

Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan is a quiet, heartfelt film that dares to tell a love story without grand gestures or conventional spectacle. While it may not have succeeded commercially, it stands out as a tender exploration of human connection beyond appearances. A recommended watch for lovers of literary adaptations and understated romance.

Rating: 3/5

Full Story – Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan (2025)

Opening

The film begins with the sound of a flute against the backdrop of the misty Himalayas. We are introduced to Arjun (Vikrant Massey), a gifted but visually impaired musician, who performs in small gatherings in Mussoorie. Despite his blindness, Arjun’s world is filled with music, imagination, and an inner sense of beauty. His loneliness is evident, though he masks it with humor and warmth.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, we meet Riya (Shanaya Kapoor), a young aspiring theater artist. Riya is also visually impaired, but she keeps it hidden from most people, fearing judgment and pity. Her dream is to act, to live beyond the limits people impose on her.

The Train Journey

Arjun and Riya’s worlds collide when they happen to board the same train from Mussoorie to Delhi. The compartment is dimly lit, the sound of wheels echoing as the train begins its long journey through tunnels and hills.

At first, their interaction is casual—Arjun initiates conversation, joking about the sounds outside, while Riya responds with curiosity. Neither reveals their blindness. Instead, they both pretend to be able to see the scenery, describing it in vague ways. Arjun says, “The trees must be rushing past like dancers in the rain,” and Riya smiles, replying, “Yes, and the mountains must be watching us quietly.”

Through this poetic exchange, a quiet bond begins.

Growing Connection

Hours pass, and their conversation deepens. Arjun plays his flute softly, and Riya listens, mesmerized. She tells him about her love for theater, how she imagines herself on stage even if she never gets the chance to truly see the spotlight. Arjun confesses how music is his only window to the world.

They laugh, share stories of childhood, and even tease each other about whether they’re imagining each other’s faces correctly. The film keeps their blindness concealed from each other, creating dramatic irony for the audience.

Moments of Intimacy

When the train passes through a dark tunnel, Riya’s hand brushes against Arjun’s. In that silence, they both experience an intimacy beyond sight—a connection through touch. Arjun quietly says, “Sometimes, we see more with our hearts than with our eyes.”

The bond grows stronger, but before Arjun can fully express his feelings, the train nears Riya’s stop.

The Goodbye

Riya prepares to leave, and Arjun, torn between honesty and fear, hesitates. He doesn’t tell her about his blindness. She too remains silent about hers, smiling gently as she steps off the train. Their parting is tender yet incomplete, leaving both with unspoken emotions.

The Twist

After Riya leaves, another passenger enters the compartment. Noticing Arjun’s blindness, he casually mentions, “That girl who just left… such a beautiful woman, though blind herself. She carried herself so gracefully.”

Arjun sits in stunned silence, realizing the irony—that both of them hid their truth out of fear, when in reality, it could have brought them even closer. His expression is a mix of regret and quiet acceptance.

Ending

The film closes with Arjun standing at a station, flute in hand, playing the same melody from the beginning. This time, his music carries both longing and hope. The screen fades with the words:

“Love is not about what we see. It is about what we feel, even in the dark.”

Themes

  1. The beauty of unseen connection
  2. Vulnerability and fear of judgment
  3. Love beyond physical sight
  4. The irony of hiding our truths when they could set us free
