Review – Damaged (2024)

Damaged promised a gripping crime thriller with an impressive cast led by Samuel L. Jackson and Vincent Cassel, but the execution sadly falls short.

The premise is solid: a Chicago detective (Jackson) travels to Scotland to help investigate a series of serial killings that echo a case from his past. On paper, this setup could have delivered a tense, atmospheric story blending American crime drama with European noir. Unfortunately, the film struggles with pacing and originality.

The story feels formulaic, with many of the “twists” easy to predict for seasoned thriller fans. The script doesn’t fully utilize its two powerhouse leads—Jackson and Cassel share some compelling moments, but their chemistry is underdeveloped, leaving their partnership feeling flat.

Visually, the Scottish setting offers moody backdrops that enhance the grim tone, but the direction and editing often undermine the tension, rushing through key moments while lingering too long on filler scenes.

In the end, Damaged has flashes of intrigue but never builds enough suspense or emotional weight to stand out in the crowded crime thriller genre. For most viewers, it may feel like a missed opportunity, relying more on its big-name cast than on storytelling depth.

⭐ Rating: 2/5

Full Story – Damaged (2024)

The film opens in Scotland, where a series of gruesome murders begins to unsettle the local community. The killings share a disturbing ritualistic pattern, with the victims left in carefully staged positions. Unable to make sense of the case, the Scottish authorities call in Chicago detective Dan Lawson (Samuel L. Jackson), who once investigated a similar string of murders five years earlier in the U.S.

Upon arriving in Scotland, Lawson is partnered with veteran detective Walter Bravo (Vincent Cassel). At first, the two clash in their methods—Lawson is direct and instinct-driven, while Bravo is more procedural and guarded. However, both quickly realize that the new murders are almost identical to the unsolved killings from Lawson’s past.

As the investigation progresses, Lawson becomes haunted by memories of the earlier case, which ended without the killer ever being caught. He notices small details—symbols carved into the victims, the positioning of the bodies—that mirror the work of that mysterious murderer. The deeper they dig, the more Lawson suspects that the same killer may have resurfaced, or that a copycat is intentionally taunting him.

Tension builds as more victims are claimed, and the press begins to pressure the police for answers. Lawson and Bravo uncover evidence linking the murders to a network of underground crime and corruption, but the connections remain murky. Lawson starts to question whether someone in the system is feeding the killer information, allowing them to stay one step ahead.

Eventually, Lawson discovers a shocking personal connection between the Scotland murders and his earlier case in Chicago. The killer appears to know intimate details about him, as if orchestrating the murders not just as crimes, but as a psychological game meant to break him.

In the climax, Lawson and Bravo close in on their suspect. A tense showdown unfolds, leading to a final confrontation where Lawson must face both the killer and his own guilt for failing to solve the case years earlier. While the immediate threat is neutralized, the film leaves lingering ambiguity about whether the true mastermind has really been stopped—or if another dark chapter is yet to come.

The movie ends on a bleak note, with Lawson reflecting on the cyclical nature of violence and the haunting possibility that some evil can never be fully erased.
