In the Viking village of Berk, dragons are seen as enemies who raid livestock. Hiccup, a skinny, inventive teenager and son of the village chief Stoick the Vast, struggles to fit in. During one raid, Hiccup shoots down a mysterious Night Fury dragon. When he finds the wounded creature in the woods, he chooses not to kill it. Instead, he befriends it, names it Toothless, and helps it fly again using a prosthetic tail fin he builds himself.

While training to become a dragon killer with other teens—including his crush Astrid—Hiccup secretly bonds with Toothless and learns dragons aren’t the monsters the villagers believe. When Astrid discovers his secret, Hiccup shows her the truth, and together they uncover the existence of a gigantic dragon, the Red Death, forcing all smaller dragons to raid Berk to survive.

During a test to kill a dragon, Hiccup refuses, leading to a chaotic scene that exposes Toothless. His father captures the dragon and disowns Hiccup, using Toothless to find the dragon’s nest. But the Red Death proves unstoppable. In a final act of courage, Hiccup and his friends, riding their own dragons, return to save Berk. Together, they defeat the Red Death, though Hiccup loses his foot in the battle.

Berk now sees dragons as allies. Hiccup becomes a hero, and Toothless becomes his partner in peace.

A Stunning Reimagining with Heart, Scale, and Soaring Emotion

Fifteen years after the beloved animated classic first flew into our hearts, How to Train Your Dragon returns—this time in live-action—and it’s every bit as breathtaking, emotional, and triumphant as fans could hope for.

Helmed once again by Dean DeBlois, the creative force behind the original trilogy, this adaptation is more than just a visual upgrade. It’s a heartfelt re-telling that honors its roots while delivering spectacle on a whole new scale. From the windswept cliffs of Berk to the fiery climax at the dragons' nest, this version of How to Train Your Dragon soars.

Performances:

Mason Thames leads the cast as Hiccup Haddock, bringing just the right mix of vulnerability, awkward charm, and growing courage to the role. His chemistry with Nico Parker’s strong, determined Astrid gives the film a grounded emotional core. Gerard Butler returns as Stoick the Vast, lending weight and continuity to the story with a powerful performance that feels both new and nostalgic.

Supporting performances from Nick Frost as Gobber and Julian Dennison as Fishlegs offer humor and warmth, while Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn round out the youthful dragon-fighting team with energy and comedic flair.

Visuals & Direction

Visually, the film is a marvel. Cinematographer Bill Pope captures the sweeping grandeur of Berk and the skies beyond with crisp, immersive IMAX-friendly shots. Framestore’s visual effects are exceptional—Toothless is not just believable, he’s full of expression and soul. The flight sequences are nothing short of exhilarating, and the final battle against the Red Death is thunderous, intense, and beautifully choreographed.

What sets this apart, though, is the attention to practical effects. From elaborate sets to dragon puppets used during filming, every scene feels tangible. DeBlois’s shot-for-shot recreations of iconic moments will bring tears to longtime fans’ eyes.

Music

Composer John Powell returns to update his iconic score, and it still soars. The familiar themes—“Test Drive,” “Romantic Flight,” and “Coming Back Around”—are reimagined with sweeping orchestration that captures both the wonder and the weight of the story. The music remains one of the film’s most powerful emotional anchors.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is that rare remake that justifies its existence. It pays loving tribute to its animated predecessor while offering enough cinematic depth and emotional nuance to stand on its own. How to Train Your Dragon (2025) – Full Story

In the rugged, wind-battered Viking island of Berk, life is tough—and complicated further by one terrifying problem: dragons. These fire-breathing creatures regularly attack the village, stealing livestock and setting everything ablaze. The village’s response is to fight back. Every Viking is trained to kill dragons... every Viking except Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.

Hiccup, a scrawny, inventive teenager and son of the powerful chieftain Stoick the Vast, doesn't fit in. Instead of brute strength, he uses intelligence, creating gadgets in Gobber the blacksmith’s forge. But his inventions usually cause more chaos than help, and the village sees him as a misfit.

During a fierce dragon raid, Hiccup uses his latest invention—a bolas-firing launcher—to shoot down the legendary, never-before-seen Night Fury, the fastest and most elusive dragon in existence. However, no one believes he succeeded, including Stoick, who’s embarrassed by his son's antics.

The next day, Hiccup ventures into the forest to find proof. To his shock, he discovers the Night Fury, badly injured and trapped in a secluded cove. He prepares to kill it—this would finally earn him respect—but when he looks into its eyes, he can’t do it. Instead, he frees the dragon. Surprisingly, it spares him and disappears into the forest.

Back in Berk, Stoick assembles a fleet to find and destroy the dragons’ nest, the supposed source of the village’s suffering. He also agrees to let Hiccup train in the village’s dragon-fighting school, under Gobber’s guidance, alongside other young Vikings: Astrid, Snotlout, Fishlegs, and twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut. Hiccup is clumsy and afraid, mocked by his peers—especially Snotlout—but hides a secret: he’s been visiting the Night Fury.

He discovers the dragon, unable to fly due to its torn tail fin, is stranded. Hiccup slowly earns its trust with food, drawings, and gestures, and names it Toothless for its retractable teeth. Realizing the dragon can’t fly alone, Hiccup builds a prosthetic tail fin and a saddle. As they bond, Hiccup rides Toothless and learns to fly—so long as he manually steers.

Hiccup begins to apply his new understanding of dragon behavior in his training sessions. Instead of fighting dragons, he calms and controls them. His new techniques earn him praise and admiration, though Astrid grows suspicious. Eventually, she follows Hiccup into the forest and discovers Toothless. Initially furious and scared, Astrid changes her mind when Hiccup takes her flying on Toothless.

During their flight, they’re swept up into a sky full of dragons heading to the nest. There, they witness a horrifying truth: a massive dragon, the Red Death, lurks inside the volcano. The other dragons are not attacking Berk willingly—they're being forced to bring food to this enormous, tyrannical beast or be eaten themselves.

Astrid wants to tell the village, but Hiccup fears Toothless will be killed if discovered.

Back in Berk, Hiccup is selected for the final challenge in his training: slay a dragon in the arena. Instead, he tries to show that dragons aren’t enemies. When he refuses to kill, the captive dragon is provoked and attacks. Toothless senses the danger and arrives to protect Hiccup—exposing his existence to the entire village.

Toothless is captured, and Hiccup’s father is furious, believing his son betrayed Berk. In an argument, Hiccup blurts out that Toothless knows where the dragons’ nest is. Stoick seizes the opportunity, taking Toothless and setting out to destroy the nest. Hiccup is devastated—he wanted peace, not more war.

Astrid helps Hiccup realize his compassion is his strength, not his weakness. With renewed resolve, Hiccup gathers his friends and teaches them to ride tamed dragons. They take to the skies in pursuit of Stoick’s fleet.

At the nest, the Vikings launch their attack. But instead of victory, they awaken the Red Death, a colossal dragon larger than any they’ve seen. It erupts from the volcano, destroying ships and killing men.

Just in time, Hiccup and the dragon riders arrive. In a daring mid-air mission, Hiccup rescues Toothless, and Stoick—witnessing his son’s bravery—finally sees him for who he truly is. Father and son reconcile before Hiccup leads the final assault.

Together, Hiccup and Toothless confront the Red Death in an epic battle above the sea and clouds. They exploit its size and clumsiness, dodging its fire breath and weakening its wings. In a risky final move, Hiccup lures the dragon into a dive. Toothless launches a concentrated plasma blast into the Red Death's mouth just as it’s about to incinerate them. The explosion kills the beast—but throws Hiccup into the blast.

Toothless dives into the fire to save him.
